How to find customers on Reddit without spamming
Reddit is full of people asking strangers what to buy. The trick is finding those threads early, answering the question they asked, and mentioning your product only when it fits.
Why Reddit works for finding customers
People go to Reddit when they want an opinion from someone who is not selling to them. That is why threads like “what do you use for…” or “can anyone recommend…” get so many replies, and why they rank in Google for years. A useful answer in one of those threads can keep sending visitors long after the thread goes quiet.
The same thing makes Reddit hostile to promotion. Most subreddits remove obvious self-promotion, and many ban it outright. Finding customers on Reddit is less about posting and more about reading: spotting the handful of posts each week where your product is a genuine answer.
Search for questions, not your brand name
Buyers rarely use your category name. They describe the problem. Searches that tend to surface buyers look like this:
- “looking for a tool that” plus the job your product does
- “anyone recommend” plus your category
- “alternative to” plus the product your buyers are leaving
- “how do you handle” plus the painful task
- “is there an app that” or “is there a service that”
- “willing to pay” or “happy to pay” plus the problem
Run these on Reddit search sorted by new, and add a subreddit filter once you know where your buyers gather. Google also works well: site:reddit.com “anyone recommend” your category finds older threads that still get traffic.
Which threads are worth answering
Not every match is a lead. Before you reply, check:
- Is the person asking for a recommendation? Complaints and rants are useful research, but rarely buyers.
- Is it recent? A reply in the first day gets read. A reply a month later mostly does not, unless the thread ranks in Google.
- Does your product actually fit? If they need something you do not do, say so or skip it.
- What do the subreddit rules say? Read the sidebar. Some allow a mention if you disclose it is yours, some never do.
How to reply without getting banned
Answer the question first, as if your product did not exist. Share what you would actually tell a friend: options, trade-offs, the thing people usually get wrong. Then, if it fits, add one line such as “I built X for this, happy to hear if it misses something”. Disclose that it is yours. Do not paste a feature list, do not use a second account, and do not reply to the same kind of thread ten times a day with the same text.
If a subreddit does not allow product mentions, a helpful answer with no link still builds a profile people click on. That is slower, but it does not get your domain flagged.
Checking Reddit every day without living on it
The hard part is not replying, it is finding the five good threads among thousands. You can do it by hand with saved searches, or use a keyword alert, which tends to flood you with mentions that are not buyers.
LaunchRadar is built for this job. You paste your website, it writes the buyer-style searches for you, checks public Reddit posts along with Hacker News, Bluesky and X, and scores each post for buying intent with a short reason. It never posts or comments for you. You get a short list and decide what to answer. Try the free sample below to see what it finds for your site.

Common questions
Is it allowed to promote my product on Reddit?
It depends on the subreddit. Read the rules in the sidebar. Many allow a disclosed mention inside a genuinely helpful answer, some ban any link. Sitewide, Reddit treats repeated unsolicited promotion and vote manipulation as spam.
What should I search on Reddit to find customers?
Search the way a buyer speaks: anyone recommend, looking for a tool that, alternative to, is there an app that, plus your category or the problem you solve. Sort by new to catch posts while they are still active.
Does LaunchRadar post on Reddit for me?
No. It finds and scores public posts, and suggests a reply angle. You decide whether to reply and post it from your own account.
